Toddler Bike Helmets
For a one- or two-year-old, weight and ventilation decide whether the helmet stays on. Our lightest model is 9.3 oz with 14 vents and a mesh behind the front intakes, sized from 18.8 inches of head circumference.
Why a toddler-specific helmet
A toddler's head is large relative to their neck, so a helmet that feels fine on an adult can pull their head back. At 9.3 oz this is the lightest helmet we sell, and the shape is rounded rather than pointed so it rests comfortably in a trailer or a rear child seat.
The front vents are covered with a fine mesh. At the height a toddler rides, whether on a balance bike, a scooter or in a trailer, everything the front wheel kicks up arrives at face level, and an open vent is an open door for insects.
Sizing a toddler
Most toddlers fall into XS. If your child measures above 20 inches, the S is the same helmet with more room, and the rear dial takes up the difference in either direction — so a helmet bought at 18 months will still fit at four.
| Size | Head circumference | Typical age |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 18.8''-19.7'' | Roughly 1-3 years |
| S | 20.1''-21.2'' | Roughly 3-8 years |
Getting it to stay on
- Two fingers above the brow
- The front rim should sit about two fingers' width above the eyebrows with the dial snug.
- Shake test
- Ask them to shake their head side to side. The helmet should move with the head, not rock on top of it.
- Washable padding
- The padding is removable. Toddlers sweat and spill, and a liner you cannot wash is a liner you will replace early.
